How Trigger Point Injections Can Help with Pain
Trigger point injections are safe and effective
Trigger point injections are a common treatment that is used to eliminate muscle pain associated with acute trauma or chronic injury. This treatment is most effective when used to relieve muscle pain in the arms, legs, low back, and neck.
Although it can be beneficial in treating many different types of muscle pain, some of the top conditions we use it for include:
- Tension headaches
- Myofascial pain
Our specialists understand how frustrating it can be to live with chronic or acute pain from an injury or accident. Trigger point injections are a safe and effective option if your muscles simply cannot relax, leading to pain. Please give any of our Texas Partners Healthcare Group locations a call today to schedule an appointment for trigger point injections.
What Are Trigger Point Injections?
Trigger points are those painful knots in your muscles that often show up in the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and legs. They usually are formed when a muscle cannot relax, resulting in a tight, wound-up knot that you can feel through your skin.
For many people, nothing provides relief, including massage and acupuncture. By injecting small amounts of steroid and anesthetic into the area in question, it can help reduce inflammation and take care of any pain.
What to Expect
Muscle pain can be extremely painful, especially if the trigger point is surrounding nerves and causing additional, referred pain. This is the type of pain that radiates to the areas nearby, causing additional anguish and discomfort.
Enter, trigger point injections.
During this procedure, a TXP team member will insert a small needle containing a local anesthetic, saline, or a corticosteroid into the trigger point. When this happens, the trigger point deactivates, eliminating any pain. Depending on the nature of your injury, one treatment may be all that you need. However, many people require a series of trigger point injections to fully resolve the problem. These appointments will take less than five minutes, allowing you to return to your day free of pain.
What type of medicine is used?
As mentioned, we typically either use a corticosteroid, saline, or local anesthetic for trigger point injections.
How long do the effects last?
Unfortunately, there is no one definitive answer to this question. How long trigger point injections last depend on the patient’s condition, type of injury, and past medical history. While the local anesthetic will wear off after a couple of hours, the corticosteroids are usually active in the tissue for about a month.
Are there are side effects?
Trigger point injections are extremely safe! Some patients report experiencing tenderness at the injection site, but this usually wears off and no other side effects are felt.
